    Topical Bible Strange Topics

    Remove <>

This search site is not a Bible concordance searching for words but searches for topics or subjects like a topical Bible. Of interest is the method as described on the home page. There are some strange searches like dinosaur or dead-beat dads. There are many searches of words never used in the Bible.

The list of verses depends on different perspectives by non-scholars and are not always relevant because of the mashup with Yahoo. However, because the verses listed are partially user generated this search provides hints at what other who read the Bible are thinking and could guide the Bible teacher in predicting what kind of issues will arise from the class.

The use of the ESV version provides one of the more literal modern English translations based upon the formal equivalence method of translation (“word-for-word” translation) which attempts to translate the Bible as literally as possible, keeping the sentence structure and idioms intact if possible. This provides a more accurate search for a biblical word. This advantage is similar to the advantage for all formal equivalence translations. Other formal equivalence translations are the NASB, KJV, NKJV, ASV, WEB, J.P. Green's Literal version (LITV). Technically, some other versions are labeled as formal equivalence translations but are far less literal by 10 to 25% becoming almost classified as a dynamic equivalence like the NIV.

    About This Topical Bible

This Bible is a mashup of the Yahoo! and ESV Bible web services. It searches the Internet for the topics that interest people, many of which you’d never find in a traditional topical Bible. Then it shows relevant verses.

Vote for or suggest verses that you think are especially relevant for a topic. Help improve it.

Searching for a word will automatically add it.

Please note that I didn’t come up with the list of topics or suggest the verses; people’s actual behavior has shaped them. I moderate some of the more offensive topics, however.

The topical data and the raw counts are available for download (updated weekly).

    A Note of Caution

Always check the context of a verse; that’s why the links are there. The context of a verse might put a very different slant on what the verse seems to say. The Bible isn’t a Magic 8-Ball or a fortune cookie, so don’t treat it like one, OK?
