Is a woman just as important as a man in the Bible?

I was asked the above question by email. Below is my response.

Women are the last creation of God. Matter and energy were the first act of creation. God created mankind from stardust. There would be no life without stars. Stars are beautiful but plants are much more complex. If one studies plants, each cell is like a little city and every part has a purpose. But animals are even more beautiful than plants. Plants can not love or protect its offspring like an animal does. Men are even more beautiful. They can reason and are the only creature with a spirit. They can thus communicate with God and love Him. Men are a shadow of the power and wisdom of God. But women were created last. Women are the most beautiful creation of God. What man would argue with this. I have never seen any creature that would compare to the beauty of a woman.

Women are a shadow of the meekness and humility of God. Many women today rebel from this purpose and lose their most beautiful trait. Humility and meekness are the highest nature of God that was revealed in Christ:

Philippians 2 NIV

Imitating Christ’s Humility

2 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,

Woman was created to be a shadow of this humility of Christ and the very highest nature of God.

For anyone to claim that women are less than men is just ignorant. If that is true why do men pursue women so much. Without women there would be no human race. Eve was certainly not insignificant. Important women are mentioned all through the Bible. Eve, Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah are very important women. Ruth and Esther have their own book named after them. There is no person in the Bible that I hold above Ruth except for Jesus Himself. Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Mary are all listed as women that are ancestors of Jesus. Jesus descended from these women. The names of these woman are listed in the heredity of Christ. The names of many men are not on that list.

Jesus talked, healed, and was a friend to many women. The woman at the well, the widow whose son had died, the woman who touched the hem of the robe of Jesus and was healed, Mary of Magdalene, Mary and Martha, to name just a few. Jesus appeared to a woman first when He rose from the dead.

The Lord Jesus shed His blood for men and woman. I expect to see as many women in heaven as men. Whoever God saves proves that they are very valuable and important to Him. The Lord Jesus is the One and Only Judge who is worthy to Judge.

Is it just me? I’ve been observing something lately, and no it’s not misogynistic, but true by observation. Women have become ugly. It’s true. Not just because of feminism that has turned women asexual and don’t even try to accentuate God’s alluring blessings, but have become ugly of spirit. They have become college educated in socialism, women studies, victimization, anti-masculinity, anti-God, selfishness, anti-children, and all around unappealing. Am I wrong here?

There is some truth in what you wrote John, and that is vey sad. BUT I go to the YMCA almost everyday and see many woman that are very beautiful in many ways. I walk up to some and ask them if they would mind if I compliment them. I have not had even one say no yet. They smile at the question and then they light up at my remark to them. Their beauty comes out in our conversation and as a bonus I often gain a new friend. They will smile and wave from the other side of the large room when they see me. Love is a very powerful thing and it causes true beauty to come forth. I can honestly say the Lord has given me love for these people and that love transforms them and me. The Lord says in proverbs that "open rebuke is better than hidden love". No one likes to be rebuked in front of others, but God says that is better than hiding love. If I see someone on the treadmill and think, wow what a really nice stride, or what a good runner, I stop and tell them. It seems to make their day. If I see a woman that looks beautiful in some way, I try to stop and tell her that I appreciate her and all the pretty woman that come to the Y. The Lord says to think upon these things that are true, pure, noble and beautiful. Women are the most beautiful thing in His creation. When I see a pretty one either in form or inner beauty, I say thank you Lord for making woman so beautiful. It is very sad that many woman are trying to be men, and many men trying to be women. That is NOT beautiful. Any perversion of truth is not beautiful. But even in these misguided humans there is great beauty. They are all children of God and made in His image. If we look with care we will see His image in everyone of them. There is NOTHING more beautiful than The Lord Himself and His image can be seen in every human being.

Many woman at the Y and other places are wearing yoga pants so thin and tight that they are very close to being naked. Some even wear them in a color close to skin tone and that accentuates the effect. You can not help but see these women and I have a choice. I can think how ugly for her to reveal her form like that. It is true that it is not necessarily a sign of good character for her to do so in my opinion. But instead I choose to say, "thank you Lord Jesus for making woman so beautiful". Instead of being filled with feelings of hate and judgement, I am filled with thanksgiving to The Lord. One can not feel thankful without being transformed to be more like our dear Lord. I praise our Lord for giving me the mercy and grace to respond in this way.

It might be a good thing to mention that many woman wear yoga pants that are not so thin and tight to have this effect. There are many woman at my gym who are modest and humble and that has a beauty in itself.
