Who was the first person to prove the Earth was round?

Who first discovered that the earth is round?

In what may be the oldest book of the Bible, Job says, the earth is a ball that God hangs on nothing. So that may be the oldest written record of someone who knew the earth was a sphere. Early Greeks record that the earth was a sphere. They could see this just as we can today; by seeing the earth cast a round shadow on the moon during an eclipse. They could also see that the moon was round.

Men who sought truth could see the earth was a sphere long before writing existed. They could watch a ship hull disappear over the horizon while the mast could still be seen; then see the opposite take place when it returned to port.

There are many ways to see that the earth is a sphere and the current fad that claims the earth is flat is a ridiculous claim that only the foolish believe.

    Note:

Someone might wonder how could Job know that the earth was like a ball hung on nothing. Job could see the moon was like a ball hung on nothing. He was correct in thinking all large bodies in our solar system would be the same. This is still true yet today.
