My son recently purchased his first car with money he earned himself. He's an honor student and super conscientious. He takes really good care of his car and is the most self disciplined person I know well.
Saturday he drove his car to a church parking lot that borders our neighborhood. He goes there frequently so he can run cross country through the woods. He loves to run distances between 7 and 13 miles, depending on how much time he can commit on a given run.
After his run, he got back in his car and began backing out of his parking space. He was probably doing less than 3 mph in reverse when he heard a loud "pop." When he tried to steer the car to leave, he realized his steering wheel was useless. It turned freely in his hands, but the wheels didn't turn.
If this incident had happened in traffic, he wouldn't have had any ability to steer the car. We are very grateful to God for protecting our son. Surely 98% of all driving occurs on roadways with other cars present. Yet this incident happened in a huge empty parking lot at 3 mph. God is so good!
We got the car towed for free with our AAA. The repairs were $450, which JB paid for himself. It was a rack-in-pinion part that went bad. I felt bad for him but we're using this situation to help him understand that with car ownership comes responsibility.
