  • What the Lord did without.

The Lord gave up everything to come down to earth and become a man. He left His throne and all the glory of His Godhead and came down to earth during what was perhaps the most volatile time period in history. He could have come back when David was king and He would have been recognized and exalted, but He chose to come back during a time when He knew He would be rejected and ultimately killed.
The following is a list of things He did without during His short time on earth as a man. I have included some of the burdens He bore as well since He did not have go through that but elected to for our sakes alone.

He never took a hot shower.
He never had an ice cold drink like tea or a milk shake.
He never had running water to wash with.
He had no air conditioning to cool off with.
He had no stove or oven to cook with.
He had to start fires by the old ways since there were no bic lighters.
He did not have a comfortable mattress like we do today with nice quilts to keep warm with.
He did not have heat besides the fire that was burning.
He had no refrigerator to keep food stored in.
He had no local store to run to and get what He needed.
He had to wash His clothes without a machine.
He had no lights besides a candle.
He had no modern medicines although He didn't need them.
He had one item to wear and that was His wardrobe.
He had one pair of sandals as shoes.

There are many more we can list if anyone would like to add to the list. But just the first one on the list is enough for me to recognize how much He gave up to come at the time era. Praise God for His mercy and kindness. I can't think of anyone that would be so generous and give up so much for so many that care so little for Him. Thank you Jesus.

Thanks Steve. The first one struck me too. I have had to take cold showers a few times in my life. It was miserable. What would it be like to do that for 33 years.

His own mother and brothers thought He was nuts for some time.

He was recognized by almost no one as to who He was. Even though He was their Father. His own children did not recognize Him, but most of His children mocked Him or ignored Him. Think what it would be like for your child to treat you like this.

He did without respect. But got plenty of disrespect.

Think of how little joy He would have. He was certainly a Man of sorrows.

Yes brother Lou He was definitely a man of sorrows. And we continuously sorrow Him yet by our behavior as children. That's what taking the Name in vain is. Not blurting out some curse or vulgarity, but claiming to be His and wearing His name but behaving like the world and not practicing righteousness and trusting Him to lead us along the path of righteousness. Many so called believers do not act anything like scripture says a believer should be behaving. So I believe that is wearing or taking the Name in vain. What do you think?

I thought the same thing but then I remembered that He didn't even have running water to take a cold shower or any shower. He had to take a bath in the natural water or fetch water and put it in a big vessel and wash in it that way or use a rag with a small vessel to wash Himself down. Either way it was primitive and not easy. It was work. We have it so good all we have to do is turn on the faucet and out comes the temperature of water we desire. Blessings brother.

Hi, brother Steve. Thank you for this topic. I don't think it's one I've explored, except briefly. Our Lord as the Son of man had no place to lay His head, and He sorrowed greatly for our sake and the Father's sake. Yet it was His great joy to do the Father's will, which was to reconcile the Father with the children, because it was the Father's joy for Christ to do so.

Part of me suspects that God would not have been happier visiting in the flesh in our time. He didn't wait for our era to make a people for Himself. He delivered a weak and poor people (though great in number) out of slavery, and commanded them to a simple life style. The altar upon which they offered their sacrifices to Him was to be of rough stone, not fashioned by human hands. He made man upright, yet man has sought out many inventions: philosophical as well as medical and technological. We are drowning in them. He destroyed the old temple made by human hands, and prefers the temple He built on grace and faith and His innocent blood.

In contrast to everyday life 2000 years ago, we have grown fat. To our collective shame, we take almost everything for granted. Yet His Spirit still gives Life today, as the days grow darker before our eyes.

          Thanks Barry and Steve.

One more thing The Lord Jesus did without was the love of a mate. Most of us seek the love of the opposite sex for love and companionship.

Think of how important that it to most of us. Consider how distressed most are when their mate leaves them. Jesus did without ever having a mate.

            Hi Barry,
I agree we are basically incapable of self sufficiency and most of us would not survive without modern conveniences. Blessings

Good one Lou. I forgot about that one. That alone must have been constant suffering. Blessings
