What do you think of Luke 14:15-24? What are some examples of this?

    Luke 14 NIV

12 Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

NOTE from Lou: Look at who Jesus tells us to invite to our banquets. God does not tell us to do something that He Himself does not do. Look ,Jesus does not say to also invite the poor, blind and crippled. He tells NOT to invite the rich and the well.

The Parable of the Great Banquet

“15 When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.”

16 Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. 17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’

18 “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’

19 “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’

20 “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’

21 “The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’

22 “‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’

23 “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. 24 I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’”

The Jews thought they were God’s people because they had the Bible and read and even memorized whole books of it. But the God of that Bible came down from heaven and was born of a woman and opened the eyes of the blind and raised the dead before their eyes, yet they did not know Him and even accused Him of being Satan. They were the people invited to the banquet, but were focused on other things rather than the God they claimed to worship.

    John 5 NIV

. 39 You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

The Bible is paper and ink and is part of His creation and it is NOT The Creator. We should read the Bible to meet the Author of it, who is The Creator. We should worship the Creator, NOT the creation. The Bible has no power of it’s own and it can not save anyone. The Author of The Book has ALL power and authority and only He can save. Even though they studied the Holy Scriptures and memorized whole books of it, the Book could not save the Pharisees. They looked to The Book instead of looking to the Author of the Book. What are you looking to for salvation, The Book or the Author ?

But some of the Jews accepted Jesus as who He said He was, like the man born blind from birth. But he was one of the very few who worshiped Jesus as the Lord:

    John 9 NIV

“35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

36 “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”

37 Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”

38 Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. “

    Luke 5 NIV

“29 Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. 30 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

31 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” “

Many professing Christians seem to think that Jesus came even for the sick. They think Jesus is so full of mercy that He will even include the sick as His people. NO, NO, it is only the sick that Jesus saves as His people. We are all sick with sin. It is only those who are aware they are sick that Jesus saves. Those who think themselves well think they do not need Jesus. Look at what Jesus said in verses 31 and 32 above.

    John 9 NIV

“39 Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.”

40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”

41 Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains. “

Do you want to see a revelation from The Lord ? Do you have a question about Him or His Kingdom ? Then confess to Him how blind you are. Did Jesus not give sight to every single person who came to Him and confessed they were blind ? Did not every Pharisee that claimed they could see remain blind and go to destruction. ?

Do you want to go to His Banquet ?

Then confess to Jesus how you are a poor blind, crippled and lame person who can not see, hear, or walk. Because that is who gets invited to His Banquet.

Thank you Lou. Interestingly you have stated “The Jews thought they were God’s people”. Kindly Scripturally prove they are not?

Ishmael thought he was a Hebrew because he was born of Abraham, but he was rejected as one. Esau was Jacob’s twin, but he was not of Israel. Jesus told the Pharisees in John 8: 33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”

34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.”

39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.

“If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.”

“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”

42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

They were not God’s people, but their father was the Devil as Jesus said. It is not by birth one is child of God, or God’s people. Anyone can become a child of God by trusting God to save them as Abraham did.

Look at Ruth who was born of Moab. No one from Moab was allowed in the Temple for up to 10 generations. But Jesus came from Ruth and she has her own book in the Bible.

We have a similar situation today. People think because they attend a church that calls itself Christian that they are Christian. You do not become a child of God by joining or attending a church. You became a child of God by trusting God to save you as Abraham did. That is why he is called the father of our faith.
