  • Did the sun really stop in the sky, if so how ?

What does Joshua 10:13, 14 mean?

Lou Newton, former Steel Mill Crane Designer and Physics Teacher

    Joshua 10 NIV

“12 On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel:

    “Sun, stand still over Gibeon,
and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.”
13 So the sun stood still,
    and the moon stopped,
till the nation avenged itself on its enemies,

as it is written in the Book of Jashar.

The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day.

It means exactly what it says. The Sun stopped moving across the earth’s sky and delayed going down for about a full day.

This passage really stumped me for years. I knew that God does not break His own laws. God is not a lawbreaker. That would be a bad example, for we are told to follow Him.

But if the earth stopped rotating to make the sun stop in the sky, the oceans would surge onto the land. It would cause many things to take place that simply did not happen.

But The Lord caused me to get an opportunity to have my way paid to a local university. They paid all tuition, fees, books etc and even gave me a monthly check to live on.

I took a physics class and in that class I got interested in the length of Mercury’s day. Some stated that no one knew the length of it’s day. But I was able to calculate that it’s day was 2 Mercury years long. I stated this in class and was ridiculed by some students. I had the respect of the Professor and he did not do so, but he was really puzzled.

So I went to the library to research this issue. I found that they had just done a radar study of Mercury and found that it’s day was 2 Mercury years long. They had proved my calculations were correct.

BUT I discovered something far more important. If someone would be standing in the right spot on Mercury, the sun appears to stop in the sky, go backwards, and then forward again. There are two spots on Mercury where this takes place. But in between those two spots, there is a place where the sun just stops in the sky for some time.

This takes place because Mercury has an elliptical orbit that causes Mercury to slow down going away from the sun. and then speed up as it approaches the sun. This change in speed causes the sun to appear to stop in the sky.

Mars appears to do this in the sky of the earth every year. It appears to stop, then go backwards, and then forward again.

If a body of the correct mass ( maybe a small black hole) would pass through our solar system at the right distance from the earth it could cause the earth to slow down as it approached the earth and then speed back up as it was going away from the earth.

However God did this, it did take place. The sun stopped in the sky for about a day.

God was very merciful to me and caused me to go to local university and then also caused me to calculate the length of the day on Mercury, and then be ridiculed. This all took place to get me to research the subject and find out that this takes place on Mercury every year.

BTW that professor reported this to the whole class and some were stunned.

Jesus proved He was willing to save you by dying on the cross for you.

Jesus proved He was able to save you by raising Himself from the dead.
