    What does Matthew 5:5 mean?

Lou Newton, former Steel Mill Crane Designer and Physics Teacher

    Matthew 5 NIV

    5″ Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth. “

Meekness is when someone that is powerful and able to bring great destruction on someone, they do not. Instead they bring great benefit to those who they could have destroyed.

Jesus was certainly very meek. He was God Almighty and could have destroyed the whole earth for it’s sin. But instead Jesus healed the sick, raised the dead, gave the blind sight, made the deaf to hear, and the lame to walk.

Further, instead of destruction, Jesus died on the cross by His willing submission to pay for our sins.

    Philippians 2 NIV

5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in very nature God,
    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
    being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
    by becoming obedient to death—
    even death on a cross!

9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

Jesus is the very highest Name of God because Jesus revealed the very highest nature of God. He did not come in power and destruction, but came as our Servant to die for us.

So Jesus is inherited all power and authority.

MATTHEW 28:18-20 (KJV and NRSV) And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Now if we follow Jesus and also act in meekness, we will inherit the earth with Him.
