SEARCHING THE BIBLE FOR WHERE AND HOW A WORD IS USED
BIG PROBLEM
Online searches for a particular word used in any English Bible may help in locating a particular verse but will not provide any definitive information about how many times the original language word is used because the search is for an English word - not the original language word. See the following example where an online search of the NIV brings up 166 verses which include the word "only." From this list it is impossible to determine the original Greek word or if the 166 verses containing "only" use the same Greek word or different Greek words. The following is a method to search for verses using the same Greek word.
USER-FRIENDLY ALTERNATIVE FOR THE GREEK TEXTS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT
Here is a simple online method of searching for all the places a Greek word appears in the New Testament using Bible Gateway.

For whatever English version is chosen under the "passage look up" drop down window, click on the link to "in all English translations".
NOTE from Lou: at this point if you do not understand ( which I did not) just keep reading,the example should make it clear.
Here is an example searching for "only" in John 3:16 of the NIV.
First search for John 3:16 in the NIV. Copied below is the result.

This brings up the MOUNCE version of John 3:15-17 with the Greek word placed under the English translation.
Under the word "only" in John 3:16 click on "monogenes".
On the right side of the screen this opens the Mounce Concise Greek-English Dictionary of the New Testamentfor "monogenes" as copied below.
Note: If the MOUNCE version is the version used to select the passage, the verse appears as an English version with the Greek text below. THE DISTNCTION IN THIS METHOD COMPARED TO A KEY WORD SEARCH
Using the "key word" search for the word "only" in the NIV will provide the 166 times the NIV uses the word "only" in the English New Testament. Such a search does not provide any useful discernment for the use of the English word "only" as used by the NIV in John 3:16 when the John 3:16 word is used in just nine (9) verses.
