  • Quotes about God's mercy

"Mercy, detached from Justice, grows unmerciful."

    C.S. Lewis

"God is more willing to pardon than to punish. Mercy does more

multiply in Him than sin in us. Mercy is His nature."

    - Thomas Watson

"Until we taste the bitterness of our own misery we will never

relish the sweetness of God's mercy. Until we see how foul our

sins have made us we will never pay our tribute of praise to

Christ for washing us... If you would know the heart of your sin

then you must know the sins of your heart!"

    - William Secker

"If one's conscience is willing to confess whatever sins have been

committed, including the sin of unbelief, it will be sorrowful in a

godly way, earnestly desiring the mercy of God."

    - Watchman Nee

"God's mercy is so great that you may sooner drain the sea of

its water, or deprive the sun of its light, or make space too

narrow, than diminish the great mercy of God."

    - Charles Spurgeon

"God tolerates even our stammering, and pardons our ignorance

whenever something inadvertently escapes us - as, indeed,

without this mercy there would be no freedom to pray."

    - John Calvin

"Mercy, detached from Justice, grows unmerciful."

    C.S. Lewis

"Have you ever stood on the same plot of ground with the publican,

crying--God be merciful to me a sinner?"

    - William Tiptaft

My favorite attribute of God. I would not even like any of His other characteristics of All-Power, All-Knowing, All-Fairness, All Everywhere All-the-Time, if He did not have Mercy for me.

The moment I saw what God has done for me
His grace was greater than my sin.

Amen Roy and Glen, if God was just and sent us all to hell forever ( which would be just ) we would not love Him.

We only love Him because He loved us first by His mercy and grace.

God never chooses to be merciful OR Just; He is always merciful AND just.

There would be no hope for any of us if not for Jesus being like this.

          Yes.
The nature of God is revealed in the plan of redemption.
Very well put in that God does not choose to be merciful but is always merciful.
          Mercy is His nature.
Otherwise, we receive what we deserve.

Describing the nature of God with any description which is different than what He has done is made from human reasoning.
It is difficult for humans to reconcile the divine nature of justice, mercy, grace, and holiness because we favor some aspect of His nature over another.

Lou, recognizing that God is always merciful, not by choice but by His nature, is extremely insightful and significant.
          Extremely!
This means it is because of His nature He is trustworthy.

          Who is this God?
Who is this God we try to fit into our standard of what and who God is?

          Can we bow in awe?

Hi Glen, This is revealed to us in the Holy Scriptures. Jesus did not choose to heal or not heal every blind man that confessed he was blind and asked Jesus to give him sight. Every single blind man that confessed he was blind and asked for sight, was given sight.

On the other hand, Jesus told the Pharisees that because they claimed they could see, they would remain blind.

Every person who asked for mercy got mercy, every person who claimed they did not need mercy got to remain as they were.

Every person received what they asked.

The thief on the cross asked Jesus to remember him, and he is with Jesus in paradise today.

The Pharisees who hated Jesus, are not with Jesus, but also got what they asked for.

Jesus was merciful AND just in every case.

So we can claim to love God's mercy, but what would be evidence that we really do love God's mercy ?

I would say if we show mercy towards others then we love the mercy of God.

In the quote from Jesus, "You have answered well."

If we love God, He has made His dwelling place with us. As the place of His divine dwelling His Temple will extrude the fruits of His Spirit -
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, knowledge, discernment, mercy, and righteousness.

And the tough part is these fruits will emanate from the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, not to just those of whom we approve, but also to those who are not our neighbor and friend.

Could we make a list of those undeserving of "our" mercy to check whose spirit emanates from us?

List: criminals, prostitutes, homosexuals, law breakers, the perverted, the ungodly, politicians, sadist, drug users, drug dealers, adulterers, liberals, illegal immigrants, and people who do not agree with me. Does that empty the dwelling place?

Thanks Glen, I will answer hopefully tomorrow. I was very busy today helping people.
