"Christ is not valued at all unless He is valued above all."

    -Augustine

"There are two hundred and fifty-six names given in the Bible for

the Lord Jesus Christ, and I suppose this was because He was

infinitely beyond all that any one name could express."

    -Billy Sunday

"Jesus is the Lion of Judah (Rev. 5:5) and the Lamb of God (Rev.

5:6) - He was lionhearted and lamblike, strong and meek, tough

and tender, aggressive and responsive, bold and brokenhearted.

He sets the pattern for manhood."

    -John Piper

"If you had a thousand crowns you should put them all on the

head of Christ! And if you had a thousand tongues they should

all sing his praise, for he is worthy!"

    -William Tiptaft

"To holy people the very name of Jesus is a name to feed upon,

a name to transport. His name can raise the dead and transfigure

    and beautify the living."

    -John Henry Newman

"The apostles went away rejoicing that they were counted worthy

to suffer shame for the name of Christ, that they were graced so

far as to be disgraced for the name of Christ!"

    -Thomas Watson

"Christ is not valued at all unless He is valued above all."

      -Augustine

Augustine was an early church leader. He wrote the respected, "City of God". He lived from 354 to 430 AD.

"Christ is not valued at all unless He is valued above all."

Is this totally true ? He says we are not valuing Christ at all unless we put Him above all.

      Philippians 2 NIV

5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in very nature God,
      did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
      being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
      he humbled himself
      by becoming obedient to death—
      even death on a cross!

9Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,

10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

For Augustine to be correct, and also Paul to be correct in the above passage, Jesus Christ has to be the very highest Name of God.

Of course the manhood of Jesus was a little lower than the angels because he became a man. But the Godhood of Jesus is the One and Only God Almighty, our Father, and the One who created everything that exists.

The Bible tells us there is but one God. But the highest nature of God is revealed in Him being born of a woman and shedding His blood for our sins.

I think Augustine knew exactly what he was saying and also he was exactly correct:

"Christ is not valued at all unless He is valued above all."

        Hi Lou,
I hope you are feeling better and that the shoulder is healing nicely.
I agree with Augustine to the extent that placing Jesus above all else should be our goal. But who really accomplishes that? So truly most of us if not all of us, put other things above Him regularly. So using the logic of Augustine, it is useless and not worth it unless I have placed all else beneath Him. So that could cause one to fall away or quit, believing it to be a waste of time to pursue Him while failing to elevate Him above all else.
I try to put Him first always. But I fail most of the time. I don't believe I should give up because I usually fall short. We all fall short all the time. Augustine's statement is a bit of a fantasy. If we could master ourselves and never yield to all of our shortcomings, it would not be His plan as there is no glory in us doing it, but when He does it through us. He wants us to need Him and to desire to be like He is, but while in the flesh, I don't think it's possible. I will keep trying though. And if I do accomplish a more perfect existence, that too would be His doing, not mine. I was born a failure and my success is Jesus Christ. Blessings ..... Steve

Thanks for the reply Steve. My shoulder sill gives me a lot of pain. I got an X-ray and it showed that there was no fractures or dislocation. But there has been some progress and it has improved some.

Augustine does not preach that we are no longer sinners.

But if someone would ask me who is above all and everything that exists, I would say that The Lord Jesus Christ is above all and He alone is worthy of worship and worthy to judge.

I believe you would say the same.

"Christ is not valued at all unless He is valued above all."

            -Augustine (354 -430 AD)

            Revelation 4 (NIV)

            The Throne in Heaven

4 After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” 2 At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. 3 And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. 4 Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God. 6 Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal.

In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. 7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. 8 Each of the four living creatureshad six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying:

            “‘Holy, holy, holy

            is the Lord God Almighty,’

who was, and is, and is to come.”

9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:

11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
            for you created all things
            ,
and by your will they were created
            and have their being.”

NOTE: We see here that God says he is worthy BECAUSE He created all things.

"Christ is not valued at all unless He is valued above all."

              -Augustine (354 -430 AD) Revelation 5 (NIV)

              The Scroll and the Lamb

5 Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. 4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. 5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

6Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. 8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. 9 And they sang a new song, saying:

“You are worthy to take the scroll
              and to open its seals,
              because you were slain,
and with your blood you purchased for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.
10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,
and they will reign on the earth.”

11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12 In a loud voice they were saying:

“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”

13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be praise and honor and glory and power,
              for ever and ever!”

14 The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped.

NOTICE: The Lamb had all seven Spirits of God. That is The Father, The Son. The Holy Spirit, The Lion, The Ox, The Man, and The Eagle.

Remember this is THE REVELATION of Jesus Christ. This whole Book and the whole Bible is about revealing The Lord Jesus Christ.

Also notice that The Lamb was standing in the CENTER of the throne of God.

This whole chapter in Rev is about revealing that The Lamb ALONE is worthy.
