Plus The Book not only contains a record of the words Jesus spoke ( and when you read them, Jesus certainly can speak them to you while you read, that then is The Word of God speaking to you ) , but it contains a record of the words of Satan, and mere men. Those words are not even the words of God, yet alone The Word of God.Last edited by Lou Newton; December 12, 2017, 03:13 PM.

Scripture is our authority for what we believe and teach. It is much more than that. Let us not downplay its importance. If anything, it is not elevated enough in my opinion. Its contents are holy, the issues are of God's holy heart; yet it is handled by many as if it were a common thing.
Many pernicious cults do so, to their own condemnation.
There exists one ministry, calling itself by the name of Christ, that teaches you don't need the Book at all: that it is a tool of the enemy: just seek God, just seek Jesus, seek mystical communion. The "priest" I tangled with used and twisted Scripture so badly, I can't adequately describe it: teaching that the Bible is the mark of the beast, and you should burn it. How does one go from being a Gospel preacher to a rank heretic like this? Clearly he left sound doctrine and followed something else.
It is not a problem that the Bible contains the words of men and devils as samples of detestable things. The problem is in the misperception of them, and/or an evil heart using them with malevolence.
Peace and grace.

Good comment. We surely did not put the Bible down in any way. We did elevate Jesus above the Book as He is The Author.
I follow His Holy Spirit, but He always confirms His guidance with His Holy Scriptures.
You are right there are many who follow some spirit without the confirmation of The Holy Scriptures.
But there are also those who follow their interpretation of The Holy Scriptures without the guidance of The Author. Look at the leaders of the RCC and many others.
Both groups have led the world astray.
No man can understand The Book without the guidance of The Holy Spirit.
Certainly the Creator is above His creation, including His Book. Abraham had no Book, but was saved by trusting God to save him.
If I had to chose one, The Book, or the Author to have with me, I would surely choose The Lord Jesus. But I do cherish His Book and have 40 of them in my home. I read from it everyday. I am very thankful for The Book.
The man who has Christ has everything there is to possess and lacks nothing. Paul tells us this in the Holy Scriptures. The same can not be said of The Book.

Thanks for this reply, Lou. I know you love your Bibles :) and it needed to be said.
Regarding the Lewis quote, I wonder what he meant by it. The word is our sword. It is most assuredly our weapon to use against the onslaught of the enemy of Christ and His remnant. The unbelieving world always tries to get us to lay down our sword. But I don't think that's how Lewis meant it; rather taking out texts to be misused as weapons?

Consider this:
The Pharisees quoted the Holy Scriptures to the people but when they did it had no power and no authority. This was just mere men speaking words and they even misunderstood them and so they did not speak the truth, even though they spoke the same exact words written in the scriptures. Men can mean many things with the same words by the way they speak them, or the way they explain them.
Jesus spoke the Holy Scriptures and the people were amazed at the power and authority He spoke with. Jesus was The Word of God and only He truly understands the Holy Scriptures. So when Jesus speaks them, He speak Truth and Truth has power and authority.
Only The Holy Spirit of The Lord can speak the Truth, because no other man knows The Truth. We all misunderstand in some degree. So when we speak on our own, it had no power and no authority. But if we allow His Holy Spirit to speak through us, then it has power and authority.
Matthew 28
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Some other places Jesus says all power and authority has been given to Him. If that is true, we have absolutely no power or authority of ourselves. Jesus has it all.
So the only way to speak with power and authority is to allow Jesus to speak through us. He has all power and all authority. We are servants and we can not control that power and authority. It is only when we humble ourselves before Him and give ourselves to Him and ask Him to cause us to do His will, that He can speak through us with power and authority. That is The Word of God when He speaks.
Romans 11
33 Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!
How unsearchable his judgments,
and his paths beyond tracing out!
34 “Who has known the mind of the Lord?
Or who has been his counselor?”
35 “Who has ever given to God,
that God should repay them?”
36 For from him and through him and for him are all things.
To him be the glory forever! Amen.
He is beyond understanding so we can never truly understand the Truth and so we will never fully know The Truth until we are in heaven with Him.
So since we do not understand, we can not speak The Word of God even though we would quote the exact words He spoke. One can speak a group of words and mean several different things with the same words. Since we do not speak to complete Truth, we can not speak The Word of God.
Only The Word of God can speak His word. He can speak The Word of God to us as we read The Holy Scriptures IF we seek His face as we read. He can also speak The Word of God through us if we seek His face and submit ourselves to Him.
Men try to take control of His power by using His Book as if it is magic. The Book has no power or authority without Jesus. Jesus has all power and all authority. Many Popes, Priests, and other men have tried to control this power by quoting The Book. But it has no power and no authority without Him.
Now even if Satan Himself would quote the words of The Holy Scriptures, The Holy Spirit of The Lord could see that I heard His voice speak them instead of Satan's lies.
So men seeking Jesus can hear His voice speak in places that do not even know The Lord.
Also even if The Lord speaks His words, some will not hear His word because they did not seek Him.
Mark 4
9 Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”
10 When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. 11 He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of Godhas been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables 12 so that,
“‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving,
and ever hearing but never understanding;
otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’
