  • Are we to follow The Holy Scriptures ?

    How can 2 Timothy 3:14-17 be a verse affirming the Protestant doctrine of 'sola scriptura' when Paul is obviously referring to the Old Testament?

    2 Timothy 3 NIV

    14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

    There is no place in the Holy Scriptures where we are told to follow The Book. It is written in The Book to seek and know Jesus and then follow Him. NOTICE they learned from WHOM not a WHAT.

    The Book tells us The Word is a Person, not a Book:

    John 1 (NIV)

    The Word Became Flesh

    1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

    God is not part of His creation. He is The Creator. The Book is part of His creation.

    Look what Jesus says about following The Book:

    John 5 NIV

    39 You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

    The Pharisees studied the scriptures diligently, yet they went to destruction. They memorized whole books yet did not recognize The God they claimed to worship when He stood before them.

    We are to read the Book to be encouraged to seek Jesus. The Book can not give us Life. Only Jesus can do that.

    Romans 8 NIV

    14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.

    Notice is does not say those who are led by The Book, but those who are led by The Spirit of God.

    Psalm 19 New International Version (NIV)

    Psalm 19

    For the director of music. A psalm of David.

    1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
    the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
    2 Day after day they pour forth speech;
    night after night they reveal knowledge.
    3 They have no speech, they use no words;
    no sound is heard from them.
    4 Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
    their words to the ends of the world.
    In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
    5 It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,

    like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
    6 It rises at one end of the heavens
    and makes its circuit to the other;
    nothing is deprived of its warmth.

    The heavens declare the glory of God yet we are not to worship the stars in the heavens as some do. We are not to look to the creation, but we are to look to the Creator.

    The Sun is a shadow, or type of Christ. yet we are not to look to the Sun. But we are to look to the One who created the Sun.

    We are to read The Holy Scriptures seeking Jesus. He will meet us there and speak to us and lead us. He will use the Book to confirm His words to us.
