  • Do we have to be baptized in water to be saved

This was given in response to a brother claiming that we have to be baptized in water to be saved.

    Lou Newton

Dear brother you are saying that we are saved by some work of our own, being dipped in water.

    Ephesians 4:4-6 (NIV)

“4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, ONE baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. “

Who could possibly think that being dipped in water would compare to God immersing us in His Holy Spirit.

The thief on the cross was not dipped in water and Jesus promised him he would be with Jesus that very day in paradise.

NIV 1 John 1 : “ 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

Notice if we confess our sin Jesus is faithful and just and will forgive our sin. There is NO mention of being dipped in water by our decision and by other men. BUT Jesus purifies us from ALL unrighteousness. How does Jesus do that, by immersing us in His Holy Spirit.

You are correct we must all be baptized to enter heaven, but that in not being dipped in water, but born again by His Holy Spirit. No one will enter heaven without being baptized in His Holy Spirit. Jesus makes this very clear in John 3 NIV :

“5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.”

Born of water is our birth in the flesh by our mother. Even Jesus was born this way. But being born of the Spirit is His Holy Spirit entering our spirit and we are born again of His Spirit.

I also have my own personal experience that The Lord took me through. I was on my knees asking my Creator to forgive me and take my life and run it as He saw fit. Suddenly something happened to me. I felt like my clothes were wet for a micro second and when I felt them they were dry. But I felt forgiven and changed. I started going downtown and preaching for people to repent and turn to God. I did not know my Creator's Name and did not know there was a Holy Spirit. But He taught me over time that His Name was Jesus and He had baptized me in His Holy Spirit that night.

Years later I let some mere man dip me in water. It was empty and nothing happened and I felt the grieving of His Holy Spirit. On my way home, Jesus spoke to me and said; "Son, wasn't my baptism good enough for you. Can anyone add to what I have done." I repented and asked Him to forgive me and He did. But I sorrow over that still today.

Who could possibly think being dipped in water, that Jesus created, is superior to being immersed in His Holy Spirit, who is The Creator.

I will trust in Jesus alone to save me. Will you claim I am ruined by trusting in Christ alone.
