  • What must we do to be saved ?

I could not sleep tonight. I kept remembering one mistake after another that I made many years ago. The time that I was selfish, unjust, or unkind toward someone just kept popping into my mind.

Over the years I do not understand how many that I have talked with can think they no longer have to sin. They speak of not sinning much anymore.

I am well aware that I am not like The Lord Jesus in any way. I have never once achieved the love and truth that He walked in continually.

I am also reminded of one that thought he was like The Lord Jesus Himself.

    Isaiah 14

12 How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!
13 You said in your heart, "I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain.
14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High."

I am thankful that the Lord has shinned His grace upon me and I am certainly very aware that I am not like the Most High and I never will be.

    Romans 2
1 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.
2 Now we know that God's judgment against those who do such things is based on truth.
3 So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God's judgment?
4 Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads you toward repentance?

How does The Holy Spirit know that the one who passes judgement on another does the same things ?

Because he knows all men do these things.

Who passes this judgement on others instead of having mercy for them? Those who are not aware that everything they do is sin. Those that are aware that everything they think, and everything they do is sin, have mercy on others who sin.

    Romans 2
5 But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.

God is speaking here of the person who has not repented fully for their sin. They have confessed some sin, but not all sin. Therefore they are forgiven of the little sin they have confessed; instead of being forgiven of all the sin they have done. There is only one way to confess all of our sin. That is to confess that everything we do and think is sin.

The Holy Spirit kept reasoning with those who were not aware of this in Romans:

    Romans 2 17 Now you, if you call yourself a Jew( Note from Lou - or today a Christian) ; if you rely on the law and brag about your relationship to God;
    18 if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law;
19 if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark,
20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth--
21 you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself ? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?
22You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?
23 You who brag about the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?

    Romans 3
    No One Is Righteous

9 What shall we conclude then? Are we any better ? Not at all! We have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under sin.
    10As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one;
11 there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one."
13 "Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit." "The poison of vipers is on their lips."
14 "Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness."
    15 "Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16 ruin and misery mark their ways,
17 and the way of peace they do not know."
18 "There is no fear of God before their eyes."
19 Now we know that whatever the law says,it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silencedand the whole world held accountable to God.
20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.

Romans 3 21 But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.
22 This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference,
23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
24 and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

We see here God's definition of sin:

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God

There is one who claims not to fall short of the glory of God. Satan claims to be like the most high. All those who think like him are doomed to join him forever unless they repent and confess their sin.

If anyone thinks that they do not sin in everything they do and think; I would ask what do they do that is on par with the glory of God.

If it falls short of His glory, then it is sin.

John understood this when he wrote this:

    1 John 1

5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.
6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.

If we claim to be without sin - This is not pass tense - it is written in present tense.

Anytime we claim that we have not sinned, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

This is an important thread. Many in the church seem to be in error about this.

I do not see how anyone could think that they do not fall short of the glory of God. Well except for Satan himself. He was the most powerful angel and the smartest with the most knowledge and beauty. Power seems to be a curse for it causes one to be arrogant and depend of oneself instead of depending on God.

    2 cor 11
30If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.

    2 cor 12

5 but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses.

    James 1
9 The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position.
10 But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower.

    Matthew 5
1 Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him,
2 and he began to teach them, saying:
3"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

    Luke 6
17 He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coast of Tyre and Sidon,
18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by evil spirits were cured,
19 and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.
20 Looking at his disciples, he said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
21 Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
22 Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.
23 "Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their fathers treated the prophets.
24 "But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.
25Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.
26 Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets.

What are your thoughts or questions about these things ?

Please post some scriptures about these things.

I know that I am blind and weak. I know that I am a coward, but the worst part of it is my inability to do anything about it. I can't seem to be able to change the smallest things that I dislike about myself. If I don't have Jesus to hope in for change and protection (even from myself ) I am doomed. Sometimes I feel bad about the better life I live compared to most people, and I know I have to trust Jesus for that too. I need to give both sides of my life and as Lou puts it, "leave go" and trust Him. I have to work out my walk with fear and trembling. ..... Steve

Thanks for the very humble reply Steve.

I will write something that The Lord spoke to me years ago. On 9-28-1995 The Lord spoke this to me and it is for you too:

My son, my little one, My under-shepherd, My dear friend; you are many things to Me, even as I am many things to you. My love for you is deep and tender. I know your desire to please Me, and I am happy that it is so. How can I tell you that though I desire holiness, and while I desire fruit in your life, still My love for you is in nowise contingent upon any attainment ? My glory is involved in the way you live. Eternal destinies are involved in the matters of your holiness and your faithfulness and your obedience to my direction and will; but My love for you is independent of these things.

I love you because you are My child. I love you because I am your Father. I love you with a Calvary love. At great price have I redeemed you; this I did because I loved you. When I redeemed you, I foresaw you lost in sin, and I loved you and chose you and set my heart upon you.

Rather that struggling to comprehend the working of My sovereignty, accept this, and rejoice in it, and draw near to Me without spoiling the preciousness of our fellowship with any shadows of self-condemnation.

You are mine, and I joy over you. Discipline I reserve for the rebellious. The first step of repentance brings my mercy.

Mercy there is great, and grace is free -
Pardon there is multiplied to thee,
There the burdened heart finds liberty at Calvary.

Let the peace of God rule in your heart and mind, and be filled with thanksgiving.

Thank you dear brother for sharing this with me. I am so very thankful for His love and I need Him to teach me how to love Him back. I am so unsure of myself and I don't believe my shallow offerings are significant. But I have come to realize His love is not contingent on me or my actions or anything else.

Amen Barry. How fortunate are we to have this free forum to fellowship at. It's not free but it is for us.
And having Lou here to share all of the things that he has shared with us. We are truly visiting and hanging out at a goldmine.
The best part is that nobody can steal the gold we get from the mine. It's ours to keep forever. Praise God for all of this. ..... Steve

Thanks for the very kind replies Barry and Steve. You do not know how much I needed that today. Satan opposes me at every step and sometimes I grow weary of the fight.

                  Lou,

It's nice to know that some of what I say has a positive impact on the body. I am sure you suffer greatly for all the damage you do to the dark kingdom. You are a rare voice for truth, what did you expect? Gifts from your enemy? No; retaliation is what you get and you know that, but it is still hard to endure. I pray for you and so does many others. And GOD knows your burden. What else do we have to offer? Suffering is one of our only sacrifices available to us. Everything else comes from Him. So how can we give back something that is His and call it a gift? I don't know maybe I am being crude, but I see it as this way sometimes. I'm gruff though and you also know that as well. I love you my dear brother. ..... Steve
