An Old Testament Type?
King Saul as Israel and King David as The Lord Jesus and His Church.
King Saul
King Saul is the first king of Israel.
Israel
Israel was the first chosen of God.
King David
King David was the first king in the Messianic linage.
The Lord Jesus and His Church
The Lord Jesus is the first of the Resurrected.
King Saul
King Saul had the kingdom taken from him and his heirs for his disobedience.
Israel
Israel had the kingdom taken from them for their disobedience and rejection of the Messiah.
King David
King David and his heirs received the kingdom after it was taken from King Saul and his heirs.
The Lord Jesus and His Church
The Church inherited the Kingdom after Israel failed both in obeying the Covenant and failing to recognize the Messiah.
King Saul
King Saul would not repent of his sins
Israel
Israel would not repent of its sin and rejected the Messiah.
King David
King David repented of his sins and was forgiven.
The Lord Jesus and His Church
The Church accepted Salvation in Christ through the repentance from sin.
King Saul
King Saul was anointed king by the Prophet Samuel while on a journey chasing his father’s asses.
Israel
Israel seldom, if ever, in a consistent manner obeyed God, but Israel was always going away from God’s calling being stubborn like asses.
King David
King David when called by God and anointed king by the Prophet Samuel was shepherding his father’s sheep. (Abraham and Moses were also shepherds when called)
The Lord Jesus and His Church
The Lord Jesus and the Apostles are the shepherds of the Church.
King Saul
King Saul and his heirs were given up for destruction to their enemy.
Israel
Israel has suffered all the curses of Deuteronomy 27-29.
King David
King David was promised a kingdom that would last forever.
The Lord Jesus and His Church
The Church is the everlasting Kingdom of God.
Note: It was the story about King Saul chasing asses compared to King David as a shepherd that put me onto this.
The contrast seemed too obvious not to be an example.
