    Does the soul live on after our body dies ?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Friends,

    Did Jonah die in whale for 3 days and three nights and then was raised from the dead as the whale spat him on the shore.

    Or was Jonah alive in the whale for three days and three nights.

    First of all, which is easier for you to believe; that Jonah was inside a whale for three days and nights and was able to stay alive in the stomach of the whale. And the Hebrew language says Jonah called out from the STOMACH of the creature.

    Or is it easier for you to believe that Jonah died in the whale without air and then Jesus raised him from the dead after the whale spat him on the shore.

    Some have pointed out that whales breath air. But Jonah was NOT in the lungs of the whale, for the scriptures say this:

    17 But the LORD provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights.
    So Jonah went into the stomach of the creature and not the lungs. There is no air in the stomach. There is accounts of men being swallowed by S.perm whales and being cut out of the whale yet alive. But this is not after three days and three nights.

    Not that our beliefs have anything to do with The Truth. But it is something to think about. I think that those who really do not believe that Jesus can raise the dead, tend to believe that Jonah did not die.

    Here is what Jesus has to say about Jonah in the whale:

    Matthew 12

    38Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, "Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you." 39He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here.
    One of the false claims of some is that Jesus was not dead, but he was only in a comma in the grave. This is a ridiculous claim, for the Romans were experts in war and death. These soldiers would have paid with there own lives if they would have not killed Jesus. That is why the soldier took his spear and thrust it into the chest of our dear Lord. When blood and water came out it proved to all of the soldiers that Jesus was dead.

    Jesus says, For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. How was Jesus in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights. Was He in a comma or was He dead. Jesus died and was raised from the dead. So then Jonah was also dead for three days and three nights and was raised from the dead.

    The Greek word that is translated "for as" is Strong's #5618 and means "EXACTLY LIKE". So Jonah was dead in the fish EXACTLY LIKE Jesus was dead in the earth.

    Notice also Jesus said this about Jonah, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here. I have heard so many professing Christians criticize Jonah and imply that they are far better than he. For they would not run from the Lord. We all run from the Lord, and we break every law in the book.''

    WE SHOULD ALL HAVE MERCY FOR JONAH, FOR HE IS BUT A MERE PUNY MAN LIKE US. Jesus will show the same mercy to us that we show for others. Which one of us has told others to throw us into the sea, only to be swallowed by a whale. Which one of us has endured such a thing for the Lord.

    Jesus did NOT criticize Jonah but honored him. For Jesus said one greater than Jonah was here now. Greater than, implies that Jesus did not have one thing against Jonah. How many men that had walked on the earth were even mentioned by The Lord Jesus. Jonah was not only mentioned, but he is given as the sign that Jesus would die on the cross and be buried in the earth for three days and three nights.

    Luke 11

    29As the crowds increased, Jesus said, "This is a wicked generation. It asks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. 30For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation
    Jesus was a sign to Israel. It was few that believed that sign. Jonah was sign to Nineveh and and the whole city of over a 120000 people repented. Certainly Jesus was a far better sign and "The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here".

    Jonah 2
    1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God. 2 He said:
    "In my distress I called to the LORD,
    and he answered me.
    From the depths of the grave I called for help,
    and you listened to my cry
    .
    Jonah himself says that he called from the grave. The Hebrew word there is "Sheol" and is Strong's #7585 which means "the world of the dead", "grave", "hell" or "pit"

    6 To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
    the earth beneath barred me in forever.
    But you brought my life up from the pit,
    O LORD my God.
    Jonah was dead, but God brought him up from he pit and raised him from the dead. The Hebrew word that is translated PIT is Strong's #7845 which means GRAVE or DESTRUCTION. So God makes it very clear to those who will believe His words that Jonah was dead.

    BUT NOTICE THIS VERY IMPORTANT POINT. JONAH PRAYED WHILE DEAD AND GOD ANSWERED HIS PRAYER.

    So while the body of Jonah was dead, his soul was not dead and was able to speak with God. God answered the prayer of a man that was dead in the body. But was alive in the soul. For Jonah's soul had been saved.

    We need to remember that the soul is the will, the intellect, and the emotions. Jonah made decisions with his will, and his emotions and intellect were certainly involved also in his prayer.

    We also have the testimony of John;

    1 John 4

    1Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.
    John tells us to test the spirits. What spirit wrote the book of Jonah. If the Spirit of Jesus wrote the book of Jonah, the book will say that Jesus came in the flesh and died for our sins.

    If the book does not say that Jesus came in the flesh it is not from God.

    If Jonah did not die and God did not raise him from the dead, the book does not testify to Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

    But Jonah did die in the whale and God did raise Jonah from the dead, so the book does testify to Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

    Why do you think the whole city repented and turned to God at the preaching of Jonah.

    REMEMBER THIS WAS THE MOST EVIL CITY ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH - How do we know that - It was the only city that God was going to destroy if they did not repent before 40 days.

    IT IS SIMPLY BECAUSE JONAH WAS RAISED FROM THE DEAD. THERE IS POWER FROM BEING RAISED FROM THE DEAD. Jonah was afraid to go to Nineveh before he died. But after he died and was raised from the dead, he walked into that city without fear. He was saying to himself, what can you puny people do to me, I was dead and God raised me from the dead.

    JONAH FEARED GOD AND NO LONGER FEARED MEN - There is great power in that kind of boldness.

    Did more people repent and were saved BEFORE the cross or AFTER the cross. More people repented AFTER the cross. It is the power of the cross. It was the power of the sign of the cross that caused the whole city of Nineveh to repent.
    Jesus raised the dead and a few people repented. But after Jesus died on the cross and was raised from the dead, 3000 were saved in one day. It is the power of The Cross.

    1 Corinthians 1:17
    * New International Version
    For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospelónot with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power
    .

    1 Corinthians 1:18
    * King James Version
    For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
    God is showing the world here in the book of Jonah that there is POWER IN THE CROSS OF CHRIST.

    You might say, how would the people of Nineveh know that Jonah died in the whale. Well first of all, what do you think a man who had been in the belly of a whale for three days and three nights would look like. I bet he was a fearsome sight walking through the city preaching. HE WAS PROBABLY WHITE AS A GHOST.

    But much more important, when Jonah died and was raised from the dead, he was the one who was changed. He walked down the streets preaching with absolutely no fear of mere men. He preached as to say, what can you do to me, I was dead and now I am alive, for my God, is God, and He raises the dead. Jonah had no doubt that if these evil people killed him, God could, and would, raise him from the dead again.

    A MAN THAT GOD HAS CHANGED, CAN CHANGE THE WORLD WITH THE POWER OF GOD, IF THAT MAN WALKS IN THE SPIRIT OF GOD.

    It was not really Jonah preaching to Nineveh, but it was The Holy Spirit of The Lord Jesus preaching to them. Jesus has all power and authority and the people seen that power and authority.

    Think of what God did through Jonah. Nineveh believed in evil idols and were a very violent people. Read their history and see for yourself. It would be as God would tell a preacher today, to go to the capital of Iran and preach that their Allah is not God and God will destroy their whole nation if they do not turn to the God of Israel. What do you think those Muslims would do to that preacher.

    He better KNOW that God is with him and has sent him. He better not have one doubt that he may be going of his own accord. How would he be sure it was the voice of the Lord that was speaking to him and not his own flesh. Well if that man died and was in a whale for three days and three nights, and then God raised him from the dead; he would know that God had spoke to him and That same God was God, and could and would give him eternal life.

    That man better have the power of the cross with him.

    There will be those who will not believe this. Even if Jesus appeared before them and told them this was true, they would say show us a miraculous sign that we may know you are the Christ.

    Jesus could tell them this,

    "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

    Grace to you - Lou Newton - Bond servant of Jesus
