Recognizing the evidence of God’s handiwork, studying science and Scripture, sharing reasons to believe . . . that’s my life’s work, it’s the mission of Reasons to Believe, and it’s your ministry, too.
So, when I came across a phenomenal new piece of scientific evidence for God’s hand in creation, I could hardly wait to share it with you.
In Science Advances*, astronomer James Green and his research team reported on their discovery that the magnetic fields of the Moon and Earth temporarily merged approximately four billion years ago, forming a “coupled magnetosphere.”
Here’s where things get really interesting . . . this coupling event required precise orchestration.
First, the Moon, which now has a barely measurable magnetic field, required a strong one at that early time. This magnetic field required a liquid iron core stirred by convection currents (similar to Earth’s today), a stirring made possible only by the Moon’s temporary proximity to Earth, specifically to the influence of Earth’s gravity.
If not for this previously undiscovered “coupling” at the just-right time, Earth’s hydrosphere and atmosphere would have been destroyed by the young Sun’s intense wind and radiation. Without oceans and atmosphere, we wouldn’t be here!
