How did God occupy his time prior to creating a universe? by Dinesh D'Souza

Could God have created the universe, and if he did, what was he doing before that? How did God occupy his time prior to creating a universe?

And to this question Augustine of Hippo (354-430) gave an astounding answer. He said, in effect, God created time along with the universe.

In other words, before the universe -- and we have to put the word "before" in quotation marks -- there was no time. Once upon a time, there was no time. A kind of startling idea.

Except that today, if you walk into an introductory physics course, you will learn that one of the direct implications of the Big Bang is that not only matter, but space and time had a beginning. In other words, one of the implications of the Big Bang is that not only did all of the stuff of the universe, but space itself and time itself, come into existence at a discrete point -- what scientists call a singularity.

This I would suggest is modern support. It's not a proof. We're not here debating proofs. We are debating evidence that would seem to suggest that all of nature, all of matter, came into existence, at a given time.

That I would suggest, tends to corroborate something Augustine said with no evidence behind him. He claimed that, in effect, he got it from theology or he got it from revelation. My point is, Augustine didn't write to force agreement with science. Augustine stated a theological proposition and modern science has come 1500 years later to agree with him.

Note from the old scribe: Although, this is a plain article of which their can be no legitimate criticism, readers should be aware that Dinesh D'Souza is a blatant, right wing conservative and adulterer. He argues and produces successful films from his opinions. While some value may be found in his material, it remains wise to be a cautious skeptic.

We do have proof that time had a beginning and there was no time before that beginning.

First evidence of the Big Bang was left by God to reveal His glory to the universe. We have seen this evidence when we look out into space and can find no space where this left over radiation from the Big Bang does not exist.

It has been proven mathematically to those who understand the math. It has been proven by many different branches of science by man and all of these different branches came to the same answer. That time had a beginning almost 14 billion years ago. 17 different and independent groups all came to the same answer. The chances of that taking place are very remote. Men do not agree easily.

But one of the main proofs is in Genesis 1:

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

So God tells us that He created

When - in the beginning - the beginning of what - the beginning of time

What did God create ? All matter and energy that exists - The heavens is everything above us and the earth is everything below.

That is the Big Bang. Told to Enoch from God as he walked and talked with God and handed down by mouth until Moses wrote it all down.

2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

Now the earth was NOT formed yet - So God had created the matter that He would use to form the earth and sun - but they were not formed at the beginning. How do we know this - because God tells us the earth was not formed. Also we can see that this first day was NOT an earth day because there was no earth formed for part of that day. You can not have an earth day before God formed the earth.

God was hovering over the deep - this is not the waters of the earth - for it was not formed yet - this is the waters of the cloud that would become our solar system.

3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

So here the Sun had formed and nuclear fusion starts - when God says "let there be light". The earth had also formed by now because we see that God divided the night from day by the rotation of the earth. This is the start of earth days.

How do we know that the sun started giving this light - because the Bible clearly shows us that the Sun is a symbol of Jesus and there is no light without Jesus. God is light and there is no spiritual light without God. So the natural is a sign of the spiritual and so there can be no light without the sun, which is a symbol of God.

Plus the earth brings forth plants next and there can be no life without light to reveal their is no life without God. Once the light shines upon the earth, the earth brings forth plants ( or life). The creation declares the glory of God, or the truth; not lies.

6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

In verse 6 God tells us about His forming the earth atmosphere and He separated the waters of space from the waters of the atmosphere of the earth.

9 And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.

Land appeared on the earth - it had been covered with water

11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

So now the earth produced plants from the water, land and the light from the Sun. These plants produced seed and brought forth plants AFTER THEIR KIND - Lions do not produce fish - plants do not produce different kinds of plants - so what kind of plants were these - the same kind of plants we have today - because the seeds of the first plants brought forth plants after their kind - that is the kind of plants that sprout out of the land and slowly grow and bring forth seeds at harvest - these seeds fall to the ground and bring forth fruit after their kind. This all takes a season to take place - because we have the same kind of plants today as the earth formed back then.

This was a sign of the cross of Christ - something has to die to bring forth life - you can not have life without death - death was from the beginning - why - because God tells us so:

    Rev 13

8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.

14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

Notice this translation and a few others like it:

Then God said, “Let bright lights appear in the sky to give light to the earth and to identify the day and the night; they shall bring about the seasons on the earth, and mark the days and years.” And so it was.

The Sun started giving light back when God said let there be light - the light could be seen from the earth and that light brought forth plants - BUT you could not see the sun for the dust between the earth and the sun. Just as you can see light on a cloudy day, but you can not see the sun. When the sun started making light, it also started putting forth the solar wind that cleared out this dust over many years. When the dust was clear the sun could be seen from the earth. That was on the 4th day.

How do we know this ? - we know that God does not create the universe to reveal lies like life can take place without light. But God created the world to reveal His glory or His truth. The Truth is that there is no life, without Jesus, who is LIFE. There is no life without the light from the sun.

So we have the evidence of the Holy Scriptures that reveal God's truth to us - and God created this world to reveal his truth.

BUT we have much more than that :

God formed the earth in a very rare place. Almost all stars are in a crowded and dusty place where the rest of space could not be seen. But our solar system is in a very rare place that is almost empty and we can look out and see most of space. God wanted to reveal His truth to mankind through His creation just as He said in the Holy Scriptures.

Man has made very large telescopes that can see out into space and see other solar systems in every stage of forming. We can see some clouds that are just starting to get smaller to form a star. We can see others that the star is formed, but the star has not started to give light. We see a ring of dust around these stars that hide the planets. We see other stars that are dying and others as they die and supernova.

This is all reveals to mankind that something has to die for him to have life. Many stars had to be born and then die to form our Sun.

Something innocent has to die for us to have life.
